Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me! O Lord, deliver me!” ¹ 

The godly ¹  cry out and the Lord hears; he saves them from all their troubles. ² 

O God, listen to my prayer! Pay attention to what I say! ¹ 

You hear prayers; ¹  all people approach you. ² 

If only my people would obey me! ¹  If only Israel would keep my commands! ² 

Listen, ¹  my child, ²  to the instruction ³  from ⁴  your father, and do not forsake the teaching ⁵  from ⁶  your mother.

Listen, my child, ¹  and accept my words, so that ²  the years of your life will be many. ³ 

A wise son accepts ¹  his father’s discipline, ²  but a scoffer ³  does not listen to rebuke.

The ransom ¹  of a person’s ²  life is his wealth, but the poor person hears no threat. ³ 

Listen to advice ¹  and receive discipline, that ²  you may become wise ³  by the end of your life. ⁴ 

Listen, my child, ¹  and be wise, and guide your heart on the right way.

It is better for a person to receive ¹  a rebuke from those who are wise ²  than to listen to the song ³  of fools.

Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to the word of the Lord who commands armies:

“Now, listen, Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen!”

When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord.

All this will come to pass ¹  because Abraham obeyed me ²  and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.” ³ 

So his mother told him, “Any curse against you will fall on me, ¹  my son! Just obey me! ²  Go and get them for me!”

Now then, my son, do what I say. ¹  Run away immediately ²  to my brother Laban in Haran.

(Now ¹  they did not know that Joseph could understand them, ²  for he was speaking through an interpreter.) ³ 

Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard, ¹  and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had predicted.
