Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They replied, “Seven – and a few small fish.”

When Jesus learned of this, ¹  he said, “You who have such little faith! ²  Why are you arguing ³  among yourselves about having no bread?

Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

And they saw that some of Jesus’ disciples ate their bread with unclean hands, that is, unwashed.

His disciples answered him, “Where can someone get enough bread in this desolate place to satisfy these people?”

Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man ¹  does not live by bread alone.’” ² 

For John the Baptist has come ¹  eating no bread and drinking no wine, ²  and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ ³ 

Then they told what had happened on the road, ¹  and how they recognized him ²  when he broke the bread.

Philip replied, ¹  “Two hundred silver coins worth ²  of bread would not be enough for them, for each one to get a little.”

But some boats from Tiberias ¹  came to shore ²  near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. ³ 

For the bread of God is the one who ¹  comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

When they got out on the beach, ¹  they saw a charcoal fire ready ²  with a fish placed on it, and bread.

Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.

Then Paul ¹  went back upstairs, ²  and after he had broken bread and eaten, he talked with them ³  a long time, until dawn. Then he left.

After he said this, Paul ¹  took bread ²  and gave thanks to God in front of them all, ³  broke ⁴  it, and began to eat.

A person should examine himself first, ¹  and in this way ²  let him eat the bread and drink of the cup.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread ¹  that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” ¹ 

But he answered, ¹  “It is written, ‘Man ²  does not live ³  by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” ⁴ 

“Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their ¹  hands when they eat.” ²
