Thus the people who had come to mourn ¹  said, “Look how much he loved him!”

for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem ¹  were going away and believing in Jesus.

Now after some days had passed, the Jews plotted ¹  together to kill him,

He addressed ¹  both Jews and Greeks in the synagogue ²  every Sabbath, attempting to persuade ³  them.

(Now seven sons of a man named ¹  Sceva, a Jewish high priest, were doing this.) ² 

The Jews also joined in the verbal attack, ¹  claiming ²  that these things were true.

For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple courts ¹  and were trying to kill me.

But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law ¹  and boast of your relationship to God ² 

Therefore what advantage does the Jew have, or what is the value of circumcision?

Or is God the God of the Jews only? Is he not the God of the Gentiles too? Yes, of the Gentiles too!

even us, whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?

For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom,

but we preach about a crucified Christ, ¹  a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.

But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Do not give offense to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God,

So the Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you – a Jew ¹  – ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water ²  to drink?” (For Jews use nothing in common ³  with Samaritans.) ⁴ 

(His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jewish religious leaders. ¹  For the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus ²  to be the Christ ³  would be put out ⁴  of the synagogue. ⁵ 

There he ¹  found ²  a Jew named Aquila, ³  a native of Pontus, ⁴  who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius ⁵  had ordered all the Jews to depart from ⁶  Rome. ⁷  Paul approached ⁸  them,

But just as Paul was about to speak, ¹  Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of some crime or serious piece of villainy, ²  I would have been justified in accepting the complaint ³  of you Jews, ⁴ 

So Pilate asked them, ¹  “Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?”
