Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

“Whole burnt offerings and sin-offerings you took no delight in.

It is better to be content with ¹  what the eyes can see ²  than for one’s heart always to crave more. ³  This continual longing ⁴  is futile – like ⁵  chasing the wind.

But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members.

Indeed, wine will betray the proud, restless man! ¹  His appetite ²  is as big as Sheol’s; ³  like death, he is never satisfied. He gathers ⁴  all the nations; he seizes ⁵  all peoples.

So the name of that place was called Kibroth Hattaavah, ¹  because there they buried the people that craved different food. ² 

For he knows no satisfaction in his appetite; ¹  he does not let anything he desires ²  escape. ³ 

“I would feed Israel the best wheat, ¹  and would satisfy your appetite ²  with honey from the rocky cliffs.” ³ 

My heart is parched ¹  and withered like grass, for I am unable ²  to eat food. ³ 

The appetite ¹  of the wicked desires ²  evil; his neighbor is shown no favor ³  in his eyes.

As ¹  Death and Destruction are never satisfied, ²  so the eyes of a person ³  are never satisfied. ⁴ 

“Blessed are those who hunger ¹  and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

Now those who belong to Christ ¹  have crucified the flesh ²  with its passions ³  and desires.

in that he spends the rest of his time ¹  on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.

Then you may spend the money however you wish for cattle, sheep, wine, beer, or whatever you desire. You and your household may eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and enjoy it.

They will not pour out drink offerings of wine to the Lord; they will not please him with their sacrifices. Their sacrifices will be like bread eaten while in mourning; all those who eat them will make themselves ritually unclean. For their bread will be only to satisfy their appetite; it will not come into the temple of the Lord.

Peninnah ¹  would behave this way year after year. Whenever Hannah ²  went up to the Lord’s house, Peninnah ³  would upset her so that she would weep and refuse to eat.

This is the way ¹  of an adulterous ²  woman: she eats and wipes her mouth ³  and says, “I have not done wrong.” ⁴ 

They devoured ¹  on the right, but were still hungry, they ate on the left, but were not satisfied. People even ate ²  the flesh of their own arm! ³ 

But I will restore the flock of Israel to their own pasture. They will graze on Mount Carmel and the land of Bashan. They will eat until they are full ¹  on the hills of Ephraim and the land of Gilead. ²
