So David set out and went to the place where Saul was camped. David saw the place where Saul and Abner son of Ner, the general in command of his army, were sleeping. Now Saul was lying in the entrenchment, and the army was camped all around him.

The donkeys of Saul’s father Kish wandered off, ¹  so Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go ²  look for the donkeys.” ³ 

Saul accepted Jonathan’s advice ¹  and took an oath, “As surely as the Lord lives, he will not be put to death.”

However, the war was prolonged between the house of Saul and the house of David. David was becoming steadily stronger, while the house of Saul was becoming increasingly weaker.

Then Saul stopped chasing the Philistines, and the Philistines went back home. ¹ 

Saul proceeded to the city ¹  of Amalek, where he set an ambush ²  in the wadi. ³ 

It was reported to Saul saying, “David is at Naioth in Ramah.”

Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.

When the residents of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,

Then David chanted this lament over Saul and his son Jonathan.

When all the residents of Jabesh Gilead heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul,

They did so, ¹  sending their financial aid ²  to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

The king had mercy on Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, in light of the Lord’s oath that had been taken between David and Jonathan son of Saul.

Then Jonathan son of Saul left and went to David at Horesh. He encouraged him ¹  through God.

Afterward David’s conscience bothered him ¹  because he had cut off an edge of Saul’s robe.

When David was told what Rizpah daughter of Aiah, Saul’s concubine, had done,

There was fierce war with the Philistines all the days of Saul. So whenever Saul saw anyone who was a warrior or a brave individual, he would conscript him.

Until the day he ¹  died Samuel did not see Saul again. Samuel did, however, mourn for Saul, but the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.

Saul went on one side of the mountain, while David and his men went on the other side of the mountain. David was hurrying to get away from Saul, but Saul and his men were surrounding David and his men so they could capture them.

While ¹  Saul spoke to the priest, the panic in the Philistines’ camp was becoming greater and greater. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!”
