It is an honor for a person ¹  to cease ²  from strife, but every fool quarrels. ³ 

The people who do this will be blessed, ¹  the people who commit themselves to obedience, ²  who observe the Sabbath and do not defile it, who refrain from doing anything that is wrong. ³ 

The Lord says to her, ¹  “Stop crying! Do not shed any more tears! ²  For your heartfelt repentance ³  will be rewarded. Your children will return from the land of the enemy. I, the Lord, affirm it! ⁴ 

So then, the one who marries ¹  his own virgin does well, but the one who does not, does better. ² 

Now I appeal to God as my witness, ¹  that to spare ²  you I did not come again to Corinth. ³ 

For the one who wants to love life and see good days must keep ¹  his tongue from evil and his lips from uttering deceit.

Then he washed his face and came out. With composure he said, ¹  “Set out the food.”

“Refrain from talking ¹  with me so that ²  I may speak; then let come to me ³  what may. ⁴ 

I was stone silent; ¹  I held back the urge to speak. ²  My frustration grew; ³ 

I stay away ¹  from the evil path, so that I might keep your instructions. ²

Do not carry ¹  a money bag, ²  a traveler’s bag, ³  or sandals, and greet no one on the road. ⁴ 

You must ¹  observe the Sabbath ²  rather than doing anything you please on my holy day. ³  You must look forward to the Sabbath ⁴  and treat the Lord’s holy day with respect. ⁵  You must treat it with respect by refraining from your normal activities, and by refraining from your selfish pursuits and from making business deals. ⁶ 

The king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you cause the people to refrain from their work? ¹  Return to your labor!”

The Adjuration Refrain The Beloved to the Maidens: ¹ I admonish you, O maidens of Jerusalem, by the gazelles and by the young does of the open fields: “Do not awake or arouse love until it pleases!”
