“Be ¹  careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. ²  Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven.

and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead! And because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him.”

“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple is bound by nothing. ¹  But whoever swears by the gold of the temple is bound by the oath.’

And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing. ¹  But if anyone swears by the gift on it he is bound by the oath.’

When ¹  Jesus learned of this, he said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She ²  has done a good service for me.

(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing, ¹  holding fast to the tradition of the elders.

The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat ¹  with unwashed hands?”

But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a good service for me.

He has demonstrated power ¹  with his arm; he has scattered those whose pride wells up from the sheer arrogance ²  of their hearts.

Jesus ¹  also told this parable to some who were confident that they were righteous and looked down ²  on everyone else.

So Jesus’ brothers ¹  advised him, “Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples may see your miracles that you are performing. ² 

We must perform the deeds ¹  of the one who sent me ²  as long as ³  it is daytime. Night is coming when no one can work.

The whole group kept quiet ¹  and listened to Barnabas and Paul while they explained all the miraculous signs ²  and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.

And even they – if they do not continue in their unbelief – will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.

because the service of this ministry is not only providing for ¹  the needs of the saints but is also overflowing with many thanks to God.

For those who have served well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves ¹  and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. ² 

But if someone does not provide for his own, ¹  especially his own family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Elders who provide effective leadership ¹  must be counted worthy ²  of double honor, ³  especially those who work hard in speaking ⁴  and teaching.

You, however, be self-controlled ¹  in all things, endure hardship, do an evangelist’s work, fulfill your ministry.

This was a symbol for the time then present, when gifts and sacrifices were offered that could not perfect the conscience of the worshiper.
