David was in the stronghold at the time, while a Philistine garrison was in Bethlehem. ¹ 

they wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another. ¹

So when the people left their tents to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ¹  ahead of them.

Joshua sent them away and they went to their hiding place ¹  west of Ai, between Bethel ²  and Ai. ³  Joshua spent that night with the army. ⁴ 

When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the trees, act decisively. For at that moment the Lord is going before you to strike down the army ¹  of the Philistines.”

So now assemble the rest of the army ¹  and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city and it will be named for me.”

So he did ¹  as the Lord told him; he went and lived in the Kerith Valley near the Jordan.

As the sun was setting, a cry went through the camp, “Each one should return to his city and to his homeland.”

No one will live there again; no one will ever reside there again. ¹  No bedouin ²  will camp ³  there, no shepherds will rest their flocks ⁴  there.

Ariel is as good as dead ¹  – Ariel, the town David besieged! ²  Keep observing your annual rituals, celebrate your festivals on schedule. ³ 

Kings will come against it with their armies. ¹  They will encamp in siege all around it. ²  Each of them will devastate the portion assigned to him. ³
