Look, I and the sons whom the Lord has given me ¹  are reminders and object lessons ²  in Israel, sent from the Lord who commands armies, who lives on Mount Zion.

You keep completely safe the people who maintain their faith, for they trust in you. ¹ 

But those who wait for the Lord’s help ¹  find renewed strength; they rise up as if they had eagles’ wings, ²  they run without growing weary, they walk without getting tired.

He will not grow dim or be crushed ¹  before establishing justice on the earth; the coastlands ²  will wait in anticipation for his decrees.” ³ 

For this reason deliverance ¹  is far from us ²  and salvation does not reach us. We wait for light, ³  but see only darkness; ⁴  we wait for ⁵  a bright light, ⁶  but live ⁷  in deep darkness. ⁸ 

We all growl like bears, we coo mournfully like doves; we wait for deliverance, ¹  but there is none, for salvation, but it is far from us.

But they just keep saying, ‘We do not care what you say! ¹  We will do whatever we want to do! We will continue to behave wickedly and stubbornly!’” ² 

The Lord roars from Zion; from Jerusalem ¹  his voice bellows out. ²  The heavens ³  and the earth shake. But the Lord is a refuge for his people; he is a stronghold for the citizens ⁴  of Israel.

But I will keep watching for the Lord; I will wait for the God who delivers me. My God will hear my lament. ¹ 

Your father Abraham was overjoyed ¹  to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.” ² 

Thus ¹  they even carried the sick out into the streets, and put them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow would fall on some of them.

so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation ¹  of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Now to him who by the power that is working within us ¹  is able to do far beyond ²  all that we ask or think,

correcting ¹  opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth ² 

Show the Lord your God the respect that is due him. ¹  Do it before he brings the darkness of disaster. ²  Do it before you stumble ³  into distress like a traveler on the mountains at twilight. ⁴  Do it before he turns the light of deliverance you hope for into the darkness and gloom of exile. ⁵ 

If you don’t inform me of the dream, there is only one thing that is going to happen to you. ¹  For you have agreed among yourselves to report to me something false and deceitful ²  until such time as things might change. So tell me the dream, and I will have confidence ³  that you can disclose its interpretation.”

When Saul and all the Israelites ¹  heard these words of the Philistine, they were upset and very afraid.

Your words have supported ¹  those who stumbled, ²  and you have strengthened the knees that gave way. ³ 

Do you intend to criticize mere words, and treat ¹  the words of a despairing man as wind?

Like a servant ¹  longing for the evening shadow, ²  and like a hired man looking ³  for his wages, ⁴
