Then John’s ¹  disciples came to Jesus ²  and asked, “Why do we and the Pharisees ³  fast often, ⁴  but your disciples don’t fast?”

While they were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness ¹  to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ² 

What ¹  did you go out to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? ²  Look, those who wear fancy clothes are in the homes of kings! ³ 

“Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their ¹  hands when they eat.” ² 

He answered them, ¹  “And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?

The disciples asked him, ¹  “Why then do the experts in the law ²  say that Elijah must come first?”

Then the disciples came ¹  to Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?”

Then Peter said ¹  to him, “Look, ²  we have left everything to follow you! ³  What then will there be for us?”

And about five o’clock that afternoon ¹  he went out and found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why are you standing here all day without work?’

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, and kneeling down she asked him for a favor. ¹ 

If anyone says anything to you, you are to say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ ¹  and he will send them at once.”

“What ¹  do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’

When ¹  Jesus learned of this, he said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She ²  has done a good service for me.

and said, “What will you give me to betray him into your hands?” ¹  So they set out thirty silver coins for him.

Then the high priest tore his clothes and declared, ¹  “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Now ²  you have heard the blasphemy!

“Leave us alone, ¹  Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One ²  of God!”

Now ¹  immediately, when Jesus realized in his spirit that they were contemplating such thoughts, ²  he said to them, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts? ³ 

Which is easier, ¹  to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up, take your stretcher, and walk’?

He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry –

And he said to them, “Take care about what you hear. The measure you use will be the measure you receive, ¹  and more will be added to you.
