then I will bring you down to bygone people, ¹  to be with those who descend to the pit. I will make you live in the lower parts of the earth, among ²  the primeval ruins, with those who descend to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited or stand ³  in the land of the living.

All her carved idols will be smashed to pieces; all her metal cult statues will be destroyed by fire. ¹  I will make a waste heap ²  of all her images. Since ³  she gathered the metal ⁴  as a prostitute collects her wages, the idols will become a prostitute’s wages again.” ⁵ 

For the company of the godless is barren, ¹  and fire ²  consumes the tents of those who accept bribes. ³ 

They come in as through a wide breach; amid the crash ¹  they come rolling in. ² 

(May those who hate the Lord ¹  cower in fear ²  before him! May they be permanently humiliated!) ³ 

My strength leaves me; ¹  I am absolutely shocked. ² 

Open your mouth ¹  on behalf of those unable to speak, ²  for the legal rights of all the dying. ³ 

Lambs ¹  will graze as if in their pastures, amid the ruins the rich sojourners will graze. ² 

At that time ¹  a man will keep alive a young cow from the herd and a couple of goats.

The ruined town ¹  is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight. ² 

“Edom will become an object of horror. All who pass by it will be filled with horror; they will hiss out their scorn because of all the disasters that have happened to it. ¹ 

Babylon will become a heap of ruins. Jackals will make their home there. ¹  It will become an object of horror and of hissing scorn, a place where no one lives. ² 

“Is it right for you to live in richly paneled houses ¹  while my temple is in ruins? ² 

(the world was not worthy of them); they wandered in deserts and mountains and caves and openings in the earth.

I replied to the king, “O king, live forever! Why would I not appear dejected when the city with the graves of my ancestors ¹  lies desolate and its gates destroyed ²  by fire?”

Then I said to them, “You see the problem that we have: Jerusalem is desolate and its gates are burned. Come on! Let’s rebuild the wall of Jerusalem so that this reproach will not continue.”

Then you will think to yourself, ¹  ‘Who bore these children for me? I was bereaved and barren, dismissed and divorced. ²  Who raised these children? Look, I was left all alone; where did these children come from?’”

We grope along the wall like the blind, we grope like those who cannot see; ¹  we stumble at noontime as if it were evening. Though others are strong, we are like dead men. ² 

Now the day began to draw to a close, ¹  so ²  the twelve came and said to Jesus, ³  “Send the crowd away, so they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging ⁴  and food, because we are in an isolated place.” ⁵ 

After many days you will be summoned; in the latter years you will come to a land restored from the ravages of war, ¹  with many peoples gathered on the mountains of Israel that had long been in ruins. Its people ²  were brought out from the peoples, and all of them will be living securely.
