For who among men knows the things of a man except the man’s spirit within him? So too, no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

The secrets of his heart are disclosed, and in this way he will fall down with his face to the ground and worship God, declaring, “God is really among you.”

David said to the priest, “Certainly women have been kept away from us, just as on previous occasions when I have set out. The soldiers’ ¹  equipment is holy, even on an ordinary journey. How much more so will they be holy today, along with their equipment!”

Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives – he who has prevented me from harming you – if you had not come so quickly to meet me, by morning’s light not even one male belonging to Nabal would have remained alive!”

But you should take careful note of this: If you put me to death, you will bring on yourselves and this city and those who live in it the guilt of murdering an innocent man. For the Lord has sent me to speak all this where you can hear it. That is the truth!” ¹ 

And so ¹  we too constantly thank God that when you received God’s message that you heard from us, ²  you accepted it not as a human message, ³  but as it truly is, God’s message, which is at work among you who believe.

“Look! I now confirm ¹  my covenant with you and your descendants after you ² 

“Look,” said Esau, “I’m about to die! What use is the birthright to me?” ¹ 

Then he asked, “Are you really my son Esau?” “I am,” Jacob ¹  replied.

But if we had not delayed, we could have traveled there and back ¹  twice by now!”

They said, “My lord, we did indeed come down ¹  the first time ²  to buy food.

Then his brothers also came and threw themselves down before him; they said, “Here we are; we are your slaves.”

Pharaoh was thinking, ¹  “The people of the land are now many, and you are giving them rest from their labor.”

The Israelites said to Moses, “We are bound to die! ¹  We perish, we all perish!

The Lord said to him, “Ah, but ¹  I will be with you! You will strike down the whole Midianite army.” ² 

Gideon said to God, “If you really intend to use me to deliver Israel, ¹  as you promised, then give me a sign as proof. ² 

Jonathan replied ¹  to Adonijah: “No! ²  Our master ³  King David has made Solomon king.

O Lord, ¹  truly I have built a lofty temple for you, a place where you can live permanently.”

Those truly of Israelite descent ¹  separated from all the foreigners, ²  standing and confessing their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors. ³ 

For the very thing I dreaded ¹  has happened ²  to me, and what I feared has come upon me. ³
