For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t sit down ¹  first and compute the cost ²  to see if he has enough money to complete it?

He ¹  replied to him, ‘If they do not respond to ²  Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” ³ 

“Would any one of you say ¹  to your slave ²  who comes in from the field after plowing or shepherding sheep, ‘Come at once and sit down for a meal’? ³ 

He ¹  was trying to get a look at Jesus, ²  but being a short man he could not see over the crowd. ³ 

So ¹  they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.

For who is greater, the one who is seated at the table, ¹  or the one who serves? Is it not ²  the one who is seated at the table? But I am among you as one ³  who serves.

Then ¹  one of them ²  struck the high priest’s slave, ³  cutting off his right ear.

Then a slave girl, ¹  seeing him as he sat in the firelight, stared at him and said, “This man was with him too!”

And after about an hour still another insisted, ¹  “Certainly this man was with him, because he too is a Galilean.” ² 

He did not need anyone to testify about man, ¹  for he knew what was in man. ² 

Jesus replied, ¹  “I tell you the solemn truth, ²  unless a person is born from above, ³  he cannot see the kingdom of God.” ⁴ 

But the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped out, since there was a crowd in that place.

(Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God – he ¹  has seen the Father.) ² 

This ¹  is the bread that has come down from heaven, so that a person ²  may eat from it and not die.

Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, ¹  said, “This is a difficult ²  saying! ³  Who can understand it?” ⁴ 

If anyone wants to do God’s will, ¹  he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority. ² 

So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus replied, ¹  “What I have told you from the beginning.

I tell you the solemn truth, ¹  if anyone obeys ²  my teaching, ³  he will never see death.” ⁴ 

His disciples asked him, ¹  “Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind, this man ²  or his parents?” ³ 

We know that God doesn’t listen to ¹  sinners, but if anyone is devout ²  and does his will, God ³  listens to ⁴  him. ⁵
