For it is a fire that devours even to Destruction, ¹  and it would uproot ²  all my harvest.

if I have eaten its produce without paying, ¹  or caused the death ²  of its owners, ³ 

And its young ones devour the blood, and where the dead carcasses ¹  are, there it is.”

They ¹  open their mouths to devour me ²  like a roaring lion that rips its prey. ³ 

Deliver me ¹  from the sword! Save ²  my life ³  from the claws ⁴  of the wild dogs!

You handed us ¹  over like sheep to be eaten; you scattered us among the nations.

lest strangers devour ¹  your strength, ²  and your labor ³  benefit ⁴  another man’s house.

“Watch out for false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are voracious wolves. ¹ 

His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal ¹  for your house will devour me.” ² 

The Lord said to Moses, “Extend your hand over the land of Egypt for ¹  the locusts, that they may come up over the land of Egypt and eat everything that grows ²  in the ground, everything that the hail has left.”

When they went back and told him, he said, “The Lord’s word through his servant, Elijah the Tishbite, has come to pass. He warned, ¹  ‘In the plot of land at Jezreel, dogs will devour Jezebel’s flesh.

Now I will inform you what I am about to do to my vineyard: I will remove its hedge and turn it into pasture, ¹  I will break its wall and allow animals to graze there. ² 

“I have been inactive ¹  for a long time; I kept quiet and held back. Like a woman in labor I groan; I pant and gasp. ² 

The ¹  ten horns that you saw, and the beast – these will hate the prostitute and make her desolate and naked. They ²  will consume her flesh and burn her up with fire. ³ 

By the multitude of your iniquities, through the sinfulness of your trade, you desecrated your sanctuaries. So I drew fire out from within you; it consumed you, and I turned you to ashes on the earth before the eyes of all who saw you.

You are too just ¹  to tolerate ²  evil; you are unable to condone ³  wrongdoing. So why do you put up with such treacherous people? ⁴  Why do you say nothing when the wicked devour ⁵  those more righteous than they are? ⁶ 

But now, why should we die, because this intense fire will consume us! If we keep hearing the voice of the Lord our God we will die!

When they invaded ¹  with their cattle and tents, they were as thick ²  as locusts. Neither they nor their camels could be counted. ³  They came to devour ⁴  the land.

They are ready to devour me; ¹  they say, “Aha! Aha! We’ve got you!” ² 

Do not let them say to themselves, ¹  “Aha! We have what we wanted!” ²  Do not let them say, “We have devoured him!”
