So the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this ¹  you have done?” And the woman replied, “The serpent ²  tricked ³  me, and I ate.”

When Herod ¹  saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he became enraged. He sent men ²  to kill all the children in Bethlehem ³  and throughout the surrounding region from the age of two and under, according to the time he had learned from the wise men.

But Jesus realized their evil intentions and said, “Hypocrites! Why are you testing me?

My father may touch me! Then he’ll think I’m mocking him ¹  and I’ll bring a curse on myself instead of a blessing.”

who are always ready to do wrong ¹  or offer a bribe. ² 

Deliver me from evildoers! ¹  Rescue me from violent men! ² 

Jesus answered them, ¹  “Watch out ²  that no one misleads you.

They ¹  planned to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? ¹ 

But Jesus ¹  perceived their deceit ²  and said to them,

And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, because she was fully deceived, ¹  fell into transgression. ² 

because they bring trouble to you by their treachery with which they have deceived ¹  you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, ²  their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague that happened as a result of Peor.”

But Isaac ¹  replied, “Your brother came in here deceitfully and took away ²  your blessing.”

Jacob also deceived ¹  Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was leaving. ² 

For I am aware of all his regulations, ¹  and I do not reject his rules. ² 

Then a spirit ¹  stepped forward and stood before the Lord. He said, ‘I will deceive him.’ The Lord asked him, ‘How?’

For his eyes are on the ways of an individual, he observes all a person’s ¹  steps.

The wicked arrogantly chase the oppressed; ¹  the oppressed are trapped ²  by the schemes the wicked have dreamed up. ³ 

For I am aware of all his regulations, ¹  and I do not reject his rules. ² 

You despise ¹  all who stray from your statutes, for they are deceptive and unreliable. ²
