haughty eyes, ¹  a lying tongue, ²  and hands that shed innocent blood, ³ 

by keeping ¹  you from the evil woman, ²  from the smooth tongue of ³  the loose woman. ⁴ 

my ¹  lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will whisper ²  no deceit.

the voices of the nobles fell silent, ¹  and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.

Then make sure you don’t speak evil words ¹  or use deceptive speech! ² 

You love to use all the words that destroy, ¹  and the tongue that deceives.

Speech ¹  that heals ²  is like ³  a life-giving tree, ⁴  but a perverse tongue ⁵  breaks the spirit.

The godly speak wise words and promote justice. ¹ 

I cried out to him for help ¹  and praised him with my tongue. ² 

But they deceived him with their words, ¹  and lied to him. ² 

I said, ¹  “O Lord, rescue me ²  from those who lie with their lips ³  and those who deceive with their tongue. ⁴ 

The intentions of the heart ¹  belong to a man, ²  but the answer of the tongue ³  comes from ⁴  the Lord. ⁵ 

to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

The north wind ¹  brings forth rain, and a gossiping tongue ²  brings forth ³  an angry look. ⁴ 

But no human being can subdue the tongue; it is a restless ¹  evil, full of deadly poison.

They speak as if they rule in heaven, and lay claim to the earth. ¹ 

The one who tells the truth ¹  will endure forever, but the one who lies ²  will last only for a moment. ³ 

The Lord’s spirit spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.

“If ¹  evil is sweet in his mouth and he hides it under his tongue, ² 

His mouth is full of curses and deceptive, harmful words; ¹  his tongue injures and destroys. ²
