Does not the ear test words, as ¹  the tongue ²  tastes food? ³ 

The crucible ¹  is for refining ²  silver and the furnace ³  is for gold, likewise ⁴  the Lord tests ⁵  hearts.

But Ahaz responded, “I don’t want to ask; I don’t want to put the Lord to a test.” ¹ 

So the warden ¹  agreed to their proposal ²  and tested them for ten ³  days.

because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

You must not put the Lord your God to the test as you did at Massah. ¹ 

For the ear assesses ¹  words as the mouth ²  tastes food.

They willfully challenged God ¹  by asking for food to satisfy their appetite.

But examine all things; hold fast to what is good.

Put yourselves to the test to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize regarding yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you – unless, indeed, you fail the test! ¹ 

Examine me, O Lord, and test me! Evaluate my inner thoughts and motives! ¹ 

Jesus said to him, “Once again it is written: ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’” ¹ 

Others, to test ¹  him, ²  began asking for ³  a sign ⁴  from heaven.

(Now Jesus ¹  said this to test him, for he knew what he was going to do.) ² 

“There your fathers tested me and tried me, ¹  and they saw my works for forty years.

In the wilderness they had an insatiable craving ¹  for meat; ²  they challenged God ³  in the desert.

And I hope that you will realize that we have not failed the test! ¹ 

For ¹  you, O God, tested us; you purified us like refined silver.

where your ancestors challenged my authority, ¹  and tried my patience, even though they had seen my work.

As the crucible is for silver and the furnace is for gold, ¹  so a person ²  is proved ³  by the praise he receives. ⁴
