Whoever hides her hides the wind ¹  or grasps ²  oil with his right hand. ³ 

When words abound, transgression is inevitable, ¹  but the one who restrains ²  his words ³  is wise.

Even by saying ¹  these things, they scarcely persuaded ²  the crowds not to offer sacrifice to them.

The fountains of the deep and the floodgates of heaven were closed, ¹  and the rain stopped falling from the sky.

“Therefore, ¹  I will not refrain my mouth; ²  I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain ³  in the bitterness of my soul.

And so ¹  you know what holds him back, ²  so that he will be revealed in his own time.

But Haman restrained himself and went on to his home. He then sent for his friends to join him, ¹  along with his wife Zeresh.

Then Joab blew the trumpet ¹  and the army turned back from chasing Israel, for Joab had called for the army to halt.

Moses instructed them to take ¹  his message ²  throughout the camp, saying, “Let no man or woman do any more work for the offering for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing any more. ³ 

After that a voice roars; he thunders with an exalted voice, and he does not hold back his lightning bolts ¹  when his voice is heard.

For the sake of my reputation ¹  I hold back my anger; for the sake of my prestige ²  I restrain myself from destroying you. ³ 

For the hidden power of lawlessness ¹  is already at work. However, the one who holds him back ²  will do so until he is taken out of the way,

yet was rebuked ¹  for his own transgression (a dumb donkey, ²  speaking with a human voice, ³  restrained the prophet’s madness). ⁴ 

You ¹  should tell him that I am about to judge his house forever because of ²  the sin that he knew about. For his sons were cursing God, ³  and he did not rebuke them.

I have told the great assembly ¹  about your justice. ²  Look! I spare no words! ³  O Lord, you know this is true.

In light of all this, ¹  how can you still hold back, Lord? How can you be silent and continue to humiliate us?

God does not restrain his anger; ¹  under him the helpers of Rahab ²  lie crushed. ³ 

Certainly ¹  your angry judgment upon men will bring you praise; ²  you reveal your anger in full measure. ³ 

I stay away ¹  from the evil path, so that I might keep your instructions. ² 

The truly wise person ¹  restrains ²  his words, and the one who stays calm ³  is discerning.
