He answered them, ¹  “What did Moses command you?”

Then ¹  two men, Moses and Elijah, ²  began talking with him. ³ 

However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision ¹  (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child ²  on the Sabbath.

Then Moses ¹  and Elijah ²  also appeared before them, talking with him.

“The ¹  experts in the law ²  and the Pharisees ³  sit on Moses’ seat.

Then Elijah appeared before them along with Moses, ¹  and they were talking with Jesus.

They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.” ¹ 

But Abraham said, ¹  ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they must respond to ²  them.’

For the law was given through Moses, but ¹  grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ.

If ¹  you believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me.

But if you do not believe what Moses ¹  wrote, how will you believe my words?”

They ¹  heaped insults ²  on him, saying, ³  “You are his disciple! ⁴  We are disciples of Moses!

and all were baptized ¹  into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,

But until this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds, ¹ 

In fact, the scene ¹  was so terrifying that Moses said, “I shudder with fear.” ² 

They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?” ¹ 

Just as ¹  Moses lifted up the serpent ²  in the wilderness, ³  so must the Son of Man be lifted up, ⁴ 

In the law Moses commanded us to stone to death ¹  such women. ²  What then do you say?”

We know that God has spoken to Moses! We do not know where this man ¹  comes from!”

Then they secretly instigated ¹  some men to say, “We have heard this man ²  speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.”
