His victims are crushed and beaten down; they are trapped in his sturdy nets. ¹ 

He waits in ambush near the villages; ¹  in hidden places he kills the innocent. His eyes look for some unfortunate victim. ² 

When ¹  he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were bewildered and helpless, ²  like sheep without a shepherd.

He lies in ambush in a hidden place, like a lion in a thicket; ¹  he lies in ambush, waiting to catch ²  the oppressed; he catches the oppressed ³  by pulling in his net. ⁴ 

The people cry out, ¹  “We have heard reports about them! We have become helpless with fear! ²  Anguish grips us, agony like that of a woman giving birth to a baby!

The king of Babylon will become paralyzed with fear ¹  when he hears news of their coming. ²  Anguish will grip him, agony like that of a woman giving birth to a baby. ³ 

Rise up, Lord! ¹  O God, strike him down! ²  Do not forget the oppressed!

You have taken notice, ¹  for ²  you always see ³  one who inflicts pain and suffering. ⁴  The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you; ⁵  you deliver ⁶  the fatherless. ⁷ 

“‘I passed by you and saw you kicking around helplessly in your blood. I said to you as you lay there in your blood, “Live!” I said to you as you lay there in your blood, “Live!” ¹ 

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

If you see the donkey of someone who hates you fallen under its load, you must not ignore him, ¹  but be sure to help ²  him with it. ³ 

In the shadows of the walls of Heshbon those trying to escape will stand helpless. For a fire will burst forth from Heshbon. Flames will shoot out from the former territory of Sihon. They will burn the foreheads of the people of Moab, the skulls of those war-loving people. ¹ 

Thus the poor have hope, and iniquity ¹  shuts its mouth. ² 

Is ¹  not my power to help myself nothing, and has not every resource ²  been driven from me?

Rescue the poor and needy! Deliver them from the power ¹  of the wicked!

The Lord protects ¹  the untrained; ²  I was in serious trouble ³  and he delivered me.

Open your mouth, judge in righteousness, ¹  and plead the cause ²  of the poor and needy.

It is trampled underfoot by the feet of the oppressed, by the soles of the poor.”

They are worthless, mere objects to be mocked. ¹  When the time comes to punish them, they will be destroyed.
