But Jacob said, “Swear an oath to me now.” ¹  So Esau ²  swore an oath to him and sold his birthright ³  to Jacob.

When Jacob heard ¹  there was grain in Egypt, he ²  said to his sons, “Why are you looking at each other?” ³ 

God spoke to Israel in a vision during the night ¹  and said, “Jacob, Jacob!” He replied, “Here I am!”

These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt – Jacob and his sons: Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob.

Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and presented him ¹  before Pharaoh. Jacob blessed ²  Pharaoh.

Meanwhile Jacob left Beer Sheba and set out for Haran.

Bilhah became pregnant ¹  and gave Jacob a son. ² 

Soon Leah’s servant Zilpah gave Jacob a son. ¹ 

So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a memorial pillar.

‘How ¹  beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, and your dwelling places, O Israel!

A ruler will be established from Jacob; he will destroy the remains of the city.’” ¹ 

O children ¹  of Israel, God’s ²  servant, you descendants of Jacob, God’s ³  chosen ones!

He gave it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as a lasting promise, ¹ 

O children ¹  of Abraham, ²  God’s ³  servant, you descendants ⁴  of Jacob, God’s ⁵  chosen ones!

and how he made a vow to the Lord, and swore an oath to the powerful ruler of Jacob. ¹ 

He proclaims his word to Jacob, his statutes and regulations to Israel.

O descendants ¹  of Jacob, come, let us walk in the Lord’s guiding light. ² 

So Jacob went over to his father Isaac, who felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s, but the hands are Esau’s.”
