They made him jealous with other gods, ¹  they enraged him with abhorrent idols. ² 

My breath is repulsive ¹  to my wife; I am loathsome ²  to my brothers. ³ 

They were not yet filled up, ¹  their food was still in their mouths,

to deliver you ¹  from the adulteress, ²  from the sexually loose woman ³  who speaks flattering ⁴  words; ⁵ 

Let them be for yourself ¹  alone, and not for strangers with you. ² 

so that they may keep you ¹  from the adulterous ²  woman, from the loose woman ³  who flatters you ⁴  with her words. ⁵ 

Your eyes will see strange things, ¹  and your mind will speak perverse things.

Our inheritance ¹  is turned over to strangers; foreigners now occupy our homes. ² 

Your land is devastated, your cities burned with fire. Right before your eyes your crops are being destroyed by foreign invaders. ¹  They leave behind devastation and destruction. ² 

But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire ¹  before the Lord.

to whom alone the land was given when no foreigner passed among them. ¹ 

“He has put my relatives ¹  far from me; my acquaintances only ²  turn away from me.

My guests ¹  and my servant girls consider ²  me a stranger; I am a foreigner ³  in their eyes.

The wicked turn aside from birth; ¹  liars go astray as soon as they are born. ² 

My own brothers treat me like a stranger; they act as if I were a foreigner. ¹ 

May the creditor seize ¹  all he owns! May strangers loot his property! ² 

For the lips ¹  of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her seductive words ²  are smoother than olive oil,

lest strangers devour ¹  your strength, ²  and your labor ³  benefit ⁴  another man’s house.

But why should you be captivated, ¹  my son, by an adulteress, and embrace the bosom of a different woman? ² 

My child, ²  if you have made a pledge ³  for your neighbor, and ⁴  have become a guarantor ⁵  for a stranger, ⁶
