Jesus began to say to them, “Watch out ¹  that no one misleads you.

They were distressed, and one by one said to him, “Surely not I?”

But he forcefully commanded ¹  them not to tell this to anyone, ² 

“I have many more things to say to you, ¹  but you cannot bear ²  them now.

For the things they do ¹  in secret are shameful even to mention.

From that time Jesus began to preach this message: ¹  “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

They ¹  became greatly distressed ²  and each one began to say to him, “Surely not I, Lord?”

It shrieked, threw him into terrible convulsions, and came out. The boy ¹  looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He is dead!”

Peter began to speak to him, “Look, ¹  we have left everything to follow you!” ² 

When the slave girl saw him, she began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”

Then ¹  he began to tell them, “Today ²  this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read.” ³ 

But ¹  those who were at the table ²  with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?”

Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ ¹ 

Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ¹  ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’ ² 

and a sound message that cannot be criticized, so that any opponent will be at a loss, ¹  because he has nothing evil to say about us.

On this topic we have much to say ¹  and it is difficult to explain, since you have become sluggish ²  in hearing.

When he speaks of a new covenant, ¹  he makes the first obsolete. Now what is growing obsolete and aging is about to disappear. ² 

And above the ark ¹  were the cherubim ²  of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Now is not the time to speak of these things in detail.

So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, and ¹  I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” ² 

You ought to say instead, ¹  “If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.”
