And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, who is to come.

Then Moses ¹  and Elijah ²  also appeared before them, talking with him.

He ¹  answered, “Elijah does indeed come first and will restore all things.

When ¹  some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “This man is calling for Elijah.”

Then Elijah appeared before them along with Moses, ¹  and they were talking with Jesus.

When some of the bystanders heard it they said, “Listen, he is calling for Elijah!” ¹ 

Then ¹  two men, Moses and Elijah, ²  began talking with him. ³ 

They answered, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, ¹  and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

Others said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets from the past.”

Then ¹  they asked him, ²  “Why do the experts in the law ³  say that Elijah must come first?”

But I tell you that Elijah has certainly come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him.”

Yet ¹  Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. ² 

while others were saying that Elijah ¹  had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had risen. ² 

The disciples asked him, ¹  “Why then do the experts in the law ²  say that Elijah must come first?”

They said, ¹  “John the Baptist, others say Elijah, ²  and still others, one of the prophets.”

Then someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, ¹  put it on a stick, ²  and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Leave him alone! Let’s see if Elijah will come to take him down!”

And he will go as forerunner before the Lord ¹  in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, ²  to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”

They ¹  answered, ²  “John the Baptist; others say Elijah; ³  and still others that one of the prophets of long ago has risen.” ⁴ 

So they asked him, “Then who are you? ¹  Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not!” ²  “Are you the Prophet?” ³  He answered, “No!”

So they asked John, ¹  “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, ²  nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
