from ¹  generation to generation he is merciful ²  to those who fear ³  him.

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to Christ, ¹  fourteen generations.

Sighing deeply in his spirit he said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? I tell you the truth, ¹  no sign will be given to this generation.”

I tell you the truth, ¹  this generation will be held responsible for all these things! ² 

“To what then should I compare the people ¹  of this generation, and what are they like?

For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, ¹  so the Son of Man will be a sign ²  to this generation. ³ 

from the blood of Abel ¹  to the blood of Zechariah, ²  who was killed ³  between the altar and the sanctuary. ⁴  Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against ⁵  this generation.

With many other words he testified ¹  and exhorted them saying, “Save yourselves from this perverse ²  generation!”
