We have submitted ¹  to Egypt and Assyria in order to buy food to eat. ² 

All the officers and warriors, as well as all of King David’s sons, pledged their allegiance to King Solomon. ¹ 

(May those who hate the Lord ¹  cower in fear ²  before him! May they be permanently humiliated!) ³ 

For ignoring the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking instead to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

Foreigners are powerless before me; ¹  when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. ²

For ¹  I did not obey my teachers ²  and I did not heed ³  my instructors. ⁴ 

They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods they did not know and that he did not permit them to worship. ¹ 

The word of God continued to spread, ¹  the number of disciples in Jerusalem ²  increased greatly, and a large group ³  of priests became obedient to the faith.

Throughout every province and throughout every city where the king’s edict and his law arrived, the Jews experienced happiness and joy, banquets and holidays. Many of the resident peoples ¹  pretended ²  to be Jews, because the fear of the Jews had overcome them. ³ 

So I will assign him a portion with the multitudes, ¹  he will divide the spoils of victory with the powerful, ²  because he willingly submitted ³  to death and was numbered with the rebels, when he lifted up the sin of many and intervened ⁴  on behalf of the rebels.”

I went there ¹  because of ²  a revelation and presented ³  to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I did so ⁴  only in a private meeting with the influential people, ⁵  to make sure that I was not running – or had not run ⁶  – in vain.
