For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise, but God graciously gave ¹  it to Abraham through the promise.

But you, ¹  brothers and sisters, ²  are children of the promise like Isaac.

“Honor your father and mother,” ¹  which is the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely,

Yes, ¹  he remembered the sacred promise ²  he made to Abraham his servant.

Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself,

For this is what the promise declared: ¹  “About a year from now ²  I will return and Sarah will have a son.” ³ 

For if they become heirs by the law, faith is empty and the promise is nullified. ¹ 

He ¹  did not waver in unbelief about the promise of God but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God.

But one, the son by the slave woman, was born by natural descent, ¹  while the other, the son by the free woman, was born through the promise.

And now I stand here on trial ¹  because of my hope in the promise made by God to our ancestors, ² 

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, ¹  heirs according to the promise.

From Paul, ¹  an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to further the promise ²  of life in Christ Jesus,

But, according to his promise, we are waiting for ¹  new heavens and a new earth, in which ²  righteousness truly resides. ³ 

Has his loyal love disappeared forever? Has his promise ¹  failed forever?

Confirm to your servant your promise, ¹  which you made to the one who honors you. ² 

And so by persevering, Abraham ¹  inherited the promise.

By faith he lived as a foreigner ¹  in the promised land as though it were a foreign country, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were fellow heirs ²  of the same promise.

For the promise ¹  is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”

This means ¹  it is not the children of the flesh ²  who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants.

Therefore we must be wary ¹  that, while the promise of entering his rest remains open, none of you may seem to have come short of it.
