Indeed, the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets,

And many false prophets will appear and deceive ¹  many,

For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John appeared. ¹ 

All the law and the prophets depend ¹  on these two commandments.”

They said, ¹  “John the Baptist, others say Elijah, ²  and still others, one of the prophets.”

as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from long ago, ¹ 

Woe to you! You build ¹  the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors ²  killed.

But Abraham said, ¹  ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they must respond to ²  them.’

“Watch out for false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are voracious wolves. ¹ 

They answered, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, ¹  and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

By saying this you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

Others said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets from the past.”

For false messiahs ¹  and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, the elect.
