Fill up then the measure of your ancestors!

as he promised ¹  to our ancestors, ²  to Abraham and to his descendants ³  forever.”

He has done this ¹  to show mercy ²  to our ancestors, ³  and to remember his holy covenant ⁴  –

Woe to you! You build ¹  the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors ²  killed.

Your ancestors ¹  ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

So Jacob went down to Egypt and died there, ¹  along with our ancestors, ² 

And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors, ¹ 

Our ¹  ancestors ²  received possession of it and brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our ancestors, ³  until the time ⁴  of David.

Then a famine occurred throughout ¹  Egypt and Canaan, causing ²  great suffering, and our ³  ancestors ⁴  could not find food.

So when Jacob heard that there was grain ¹  in Egypt, he sent our ancestors ²  there ³  the first time.

Our ¹  ancestors ²  were unwilling to obey ³  him, but pushed him aside ⁴  and turned back to Egypt in their hearts,

“You stubborn ¹  people, with uncircumcised ²  hearts and ears! ³  You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, like your ancestors ⁴  did!

And now I stand here on trial ¹  because of my hope in the promise made by God to our ancestors, ² 

After God spoke long ago ¹  in various portions ²  and in various ways ³  to our ancestors ⁴  through the prophets,

And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, ¹  we would not have participated with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

Rejoice in that day, and jump for joy, because ¹  your reward is great in heaven. For their ancestors ²  did the same things to the prophets. ³ 

“Woe to you ¹  when all people ²  speak well of you, for their ancestors ³  did the same things to the false prophets.

So you testify that you approve of ¹  the deeds of your ancestors, ²  because they killed the prophets ³  and you build their ⁴  tombs! ⁵ 

Our ancestors ¹  ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” ² 

This was the one who exploited ¹  our people ²  and was cruel to our ancestors, ³  forcing them to abandon ⁴  their infants so they would die. ⁵
