The king said, “Find out whose son this boy is!”

The watchman replies, “Morning is coming, but then night. ¹  If you want to ask, ask; come back again.” ² 

“For inquire now of the former ¹  generation, and pay attention ²  to the findings ³  of their ancestors; ⁴ 

Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire ¹  of God.

Then Jehoshaphat added, ¹  “First seek an oracle from the Lord.” ² 

Then Jehoshaphat added, ¹  “First seek an oracle from the Lord.” ² 

But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not a prophet of the Lord still here, that we may ask him?”

You must investigate thoroughly and inquire carefully. If it is indeed true that such a disgraceful thing is being done among you, ¹ 

But David could not go before it to seek God’s will, for he was afraid of the sword of the Lord’s messenger.

But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not a prophet of the Lord still here, that we may ask him?”

They said to him, “Seek a divine oracle for us, ¹  so we can know if we will be successful on our mission.” ² 

Elijah ¹  said to the king, ²  “This is what the Lord says, ‘You sent messengers to seek an oracle from Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron. You must think there is no God in Israel from whom you can seek an oracle! ³  Therefore you will not leave the bed you lie on, for you will certainly die.’” ⁴ 

(Now it used to be in Israel that whenever someone went to inquire of God he would say, “Come on, let’s go to the seer.” For today’s prophet used to be called a seer.)

So Saul instructed his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, ¹  so that I may go to her and inquire of her.” His servants replied to him, “There is a woman who is a medium in Endor.”

that ¹  you must search out ²  my iniquity, and inquire about my sin,

But the children struggled ¹  inside her, and she said, “If it is going to be like this, I’m not so sure I want to be pregnant!” ²  So she asked the Lord, ³ 

After they have been destroyed from your presence, be careful not to be ensnared like they are; do not pursue their gods and say, “How do these nations serve their gods? I will do the same.”

So the king told Hazael, “Take a gift ¹  and go visit the prophet. Request from him an oracle from the Lord. Ask him, ²  ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’”
