But if the slayer at any time goes outside the boundary of the town to which he had fled,

At this point the angelic messenger ¹  who spoke to me went out, and another messenger came to meet him

He has searched ¹  the sources ²  of the rivers and what was hidden he has brought into the light.

“Who shut up ¹  the sea with doors when it burst forth, ²  coming out of the womb,

Make a just decision on my behalf! ¹  Decide what is right! ² 

Their prosperity causes them to do wrong; ¹  their thoughts are sinful. ² 

Men then go out to do their work, and labor away until evening. ¹ 

When he is judged, he will be found ¹  guilty! ²  Then his prayer will be regarded as sinful.

For this reason the law lacks power, ¹  and justice is never carried out. ²  Indeed, ³  the wicked intimidate ⁴  the innocent. ⁵  For this reason justice is perverted. ⁶
