Then I set cups and pitchers full of wine in front of the members of the Rechabite community and said to them, “Have some wine.” ¹ 

You have made your people experience hard times; ¹  you have made us drink intoxicating wine. ² 

Do not spend time ¹  among drunkards, ²  among those who eat too much ³  meat,

Those who are champions ¹  at drinking wine are as good as dead, ²  who display great courage when mixing strong drinks.

They no longer sing and drink wine; ¹  the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.

Come, let’s make our father drunk with wine ¹  so we can have sexual relations ²  with him and preserve ³  our family line through our father.” ⁴ 

who ate the best of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise and help you; let them be your refuge!

Now be careful! Do not drink wine or beer, and do not eat any food that will make you ritually unclean. ¹ 

Now the day ²  came when Job’s ³  sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,

The one who loves ¹  pleasure ²  will be ³  a poor person; ⁴  whoever loves wine and anointing oil ⁵  will not be rich.

Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles ¹  in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. ² 

It is not for kings, ¹  O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, ²  or for rulers to crave strong drink, ³ 

Those who get up early to drink beer are as good as dead, ¹  those who keep drinking long after dark until they are intoxicated with wine. ² 

You will be shocked and amazed! ¹  You are totally blind! ²  They are drunk, ³  but not because of wine; they stagger, ⁴  but not because of beer.

Each one says, ¹  ‘Come on, I’ll get some wine! Let’s guzzle some beer! Tomorrow will be just like today! We’ll have everything we want!’ ² 

Wake up, you drunkards, ¹  and weep! Wail, all you wine drinkers, ²  because the sweet wine ³  has been taken away ⁴  from you. ⁵ 

“But you made the Nazirites drink wine; ¹  you commanded the prophets, ‘Do not prophesy!’

They drink wine from sacrificial bowls, ¹  and pour the very best oils on themselves. ²  Yet they are not concerned over ³  the ruin ⁴  of Joseph.

“So tell them, ¹  ‘The Lord, the God of Israel, says, “Every wine jar is made to be filled with wine.”’ ²  And they will probably say to you, ‘Do you not think we know ³  that every wine jar is supposed to be filled with wine?’

But they answered, “We do not drink wine because our ancestor Jonadab son of Rechab commanded us not to. He told us, ‘You and your children must never drink wine.
