His sons must recompense ¹  the poor; his own hands ²  must return his wealth.

It is trampled underfoot by the feet of the oppressed, by the soles of the poor.”

For he has oppressed the poor and abandoned them; ¹  he has seized a house which he did not build. ² 

If I have refused to give the poor what they desired, ¹  or caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

The wealth of a rich person is like ¹  a fortified city, ²  but the poor are brought to ruin ³  by ⁴  their poverty.

A poor person ¹  who oppresses the weak is like ²  a driving rain without food. ³ 

The one who increases his wealth by increasing interest ¹  gathers it for someone who is gracious ²  to the needy.

The righteous person cares for ¹  the legal rights ²  of the poor; the wicked does not understand such ³  knowledge.

If a king judges the poor in truth, ¹  his throne ²  will be established forever.

The poor will graze in my pastures; ¹  the needy will rest securely. But I will kill your root by famine; it will put to death all your survivors. ² 

We’re eager to trade silver for the poor, ¹  a pair of sandals ²  for the needy! We want to mix in some chaff with the grain!” ³ 

to keep the poor from getting fair treatment, and to deprive ¹  the oppressed among my people of justice, so they can steal what widows own, and loot what belongs to orphans. ² 

He will treat the poor fairly, ¹  and make right decisions ²  for the downtrodden of the earth. ³  He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, ⁴  and order the wicked to be executed. ⁵ 

I thought, “Surely it is only the ignorant poor who act this way. ¹  They act like fools because they do not know what the Lord demands. ²  They do not know what their God requires of them. ³ 

Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan ¹  who live on Mount Samaria! You ²  oppress the poor; you crush the needy. You say to your ³  husbands, “Bring us more to drink!” ⁴ 

They trample ¹  on the dirt-covered heads of the poor; ²  they push the destitute away. ³  A man and his father go to the same girl; ⁴  in this way they show disrespect ⁵  for my moral purity. ⁶
