Rehoboam traveled to Shechem, for all Israel had gathered in ¹  Shechem to make Rehoboam ²  king.

They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and left.

God sent a spirit to stir up hostility ¹  between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem. He made the leaders of Shechem disloyal ²  to Abimelech.

Then Shechem’s father Hamor went to speak with Jacob about Dinah. ¹ 

Their offer pleased Hamor and his son Shechem. ¹ 

So Gaal led the leaders of Shechem out ¹  and fought Abimelech.

Abimelech heard ¹  that all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem were in one place. ² 

For you make them retreat ¹  when you shoot your arrows at them. ² 

Abram traveled through the land as far as the oak tree ¹  of Moreh ²  at Shechem. ³  (At that time the Canaanites were in the land.) ⁴ 

Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Acquire this young girl as my wife.” ¹ 

Gaal son of Ebed ¹  came through Shechem with his brothers. The leaders of Shechem transferred their loyalty to him. ² 

So Abimelech and all his men came up ¹  at night and set an ambush outside Shechem – they divided into ²  four units.

When all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem ¹  heard the news, they went to the stronghold ²  of the temple of El-Berith. ³

God has spoken in his sanctuary: ¹  “I will triumph! I will parcel out Shechem; the Valley of Succoth I will measure off. ²

But if not, may fire blaze from Abimelech and consume the leaders of Shechem and Beth Millo! May fire also blaze from the leaders of Shechem and Beth Millo and consume Abimelech!”

Gaal son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerub-Baal, and is not Zebul the deputy he appointed? ¹  Serve the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem! But why should we serve Abimelech? ² 

After he left Paddan Aram, Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and he camped near ¹  the city.

Then he purchased the portion of the field where he had pitched his tent; he bought it ¹  from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of money. ²
