Then they took him and threw him into the cistern. (Now the cistern was empty; ¹  there was no water in it.)

Later Reuben returned to the cistern to find that Joseph was not in it! ¹  He tore his clothes,

You place me in the lowest regions of the pit, ¹  in the dark places, in the watery depths.

We will swallow them alive ¹  like Sheol, ²  those full of vigor ³  like those going down to the Pit.

Drink water from your own cistern and running water from your own well. ¹ 

They shut me ¹  up in a pit and threw stones at me.

ק (Qof) I have called on your name, O Lord, from the deepest pit. ¹ 

“If a man opens a pit or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it,

he digs a pit ¹  and then falls into the hole he has made. ² 

But you were brought down ¹  to Sheol, to the remote slopes of the pit. ² 

the owner of the pit must repay ¹  the loss. He must give money ²  to its owner, and the dead animal ³  will become his.

However, a spring or a cistern which collects water ¹  will be clean, but one who touches their carcass will be unclean.

David was thirsty and said, “How I wish someone would give me some water to drink ¹  from the cistern in Bethlehem near the city gate!”

He lifted me out of the watery pit, ¹  out of the slimy mud. ²  He placed my feet on a rock and gave me secure footing. ³ 

They treat me like ¹  those who descend into the grave. ²  I am like a helpless man, ³ 

The one who is tormented ¹  by the murder ²  of another will flee to the pit; ³  let no one support him.

They will be imprisoned in a pit, ¹  locked up in a prison, and after staying there for a long time, ²  they will be punished. ³ 

Indeed ¹  Sheol does not give you thanks; death does not ²  praise you. Those who descend into the pit do not anticipate your faithfulness.

So they pulled Jeremiah up from the cistern with ropes. Jeremiah, however, still remained confined ¹  to the courtyard of the guardhouse.

Moreover, as for you, because of our covenant relationship secured with blood, I will release your prisoners from the waterless pit.
