Then three days after I had my baby, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one else in the house except the two of us. ¹ 

“So today we are slaves! In the very land you gave to our ancestors to eat its fruit and to enjoy ¹  its good things – we are slaves!

But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies!

Now, our God, we give thanks to you and praise your majestic name!

Get up, for this matter concerns you. We are with you, so be strong and act decisively!”

They will fall down, ¹  but we ²  will stand firm. ³ 

For he knows what we are made of; ¹  he realizes ²  we are made of clay. ³ 

But we will praise the Lord now and forevermore. Praise the Lord!

“They cry, ¹  ‘Harvest time has come and gone, and the summer is over, ²  and still we have not been delivered.’

How can you men of Moab say, ‘We are heroes, men who are mighty in battle?’

Our forefathers ¹  sinned and are dead, ²  but we ³  suffer ⁴  their punishment. ⁵ 

We are all the sons of one man; we are honest men! Your servants are not spies.”

If one of us has it, ¹  he will die, and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves!”

Why ¹  have you brought up the Lord’s community into this wilderness? So that ²  we and our cattle should die here?

You must not do like we are doing here today, with everyone ¹  doing what seems best to him,

The men said to her, “We are not bound by this oath you made us swear unless the following conditions are met: ¹ 

But they said to Joshua, “We are willing to be your subjects.” ¹  So Joshua said to them, “Who are you and where do you come from?”

They said to him, “Seek a divine oracle for us, ¹  so we can know if we will be successful on our mission.” ² 

We will be like all the other nations. Our king will judge us and lead us ¹  and fight our battles.”

Jonathan replied, “All right! ¹  We’ll go over to these men and fight them.
