When ¹  I hear a reproof that dishonors ²  me, then my understanding ³  prompts me to answer. ⁴ 

My accusers will be covered ¹  with shame, and draped in humiliation as if it were a robe.

All day long I feel humiliated ¹  and am overwhelmed with shame, ² 

For I suffer ¹  humiliation for your sake ²  and am thoroughly disgraced. ³ 

The one who gives an answer ¹  before he listens ²  – that is his folly and his shame. ³ 

You men, ¹  how long will you try to turn my honor into shame? ²  How long ³  will you love what is worthless ⁴  and search for what is deceptive? ⁵  (Selah)

May those who want to harm me be totally embarrassed and ashamed! ¹  May those who arrogantly taunt me be covered with shame and humiliation! ² 

You know how I am insulted, humiliated and disgraced; you can see all my enemies. ¹ 

May my accusers be humiliated and defeated! May those who want to harm me ¹  be covered with scorn and disgrace!

But Pharaoh’s protection will bring you nothing but shame, and the safety of Egypt’s protective shade nothing but humiliation.

They will all be ashamed and embarrassed; those who fashion idols will all be humiliated. ¹ 

I offered my back to those who attacked, ¹  my jaws to those who tore out my beard; I did not hide my face from insults and spitting.

so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in consoling them.

‘Don’t preach with such impassioned rhetoric,’ they say excitedly. ¹  ‘These prophets should not preach of such things; we will not be overtaken by humiliation.’ ² 

So now, bear your disgrace, because you have given your sisters reason to justify their behavior. ¹  Because the sins you have committed were more abominable than those of your sisters; they have become more righteous than you. So now, be ashamed and bear the disgrace of making your sisters appear righteous.

Instead of shame, you will get a double portion; ¹  instead of humiliation, they will rejoice over the land they receive. ²  Yes, ³  they will possess a double portion in their land and experience lasting joy.

‘We ¹  are ashamed because we have been insulted. ²  Our faces show our disgrace. ³  For foreigners have invaded the holy rooms ⁴  in the Lord’s temple.’

I will prepare for them a healthy ¹  planting. They will no longer be victims ²  of famine in the land and will no longer bear the insults of the nations.

So this is what the sovereign Lord says: I vow ¹  that the nations around you will endure insults as well.

They will bear their shame for all their unfaithful acts against me, when they live securely on their land with no one to make them afraid.
