The female servants came forward with their children and bowed down. ¹ 

They allow their children to run ¹  like a flock; their little ones dance about.

They crouch, they bear ¹  their young, they bring forth the offspring they have carried. ² 

He put the servants and their children in front, with Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph behind them. ¹ 

opened it, ¹  and saw the child ²  – a boy, ³  crying! ⁴  – and she felt compassion ⁵  for him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child ¹  and nurse him for me, and I will pay your ²  wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.

He had two wives; the name of the first was Hannah and the name of the second was Peninnah. Now Peninnah had children, but Hannah was childless.

When David saw that his servants were whispering to one another, he ¹  realized that the child was dead. So David asked his servants, “Is the child dead?” They replied, “Yes, he’s dead.”

He replied, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept because I thought, ¹  ‘Perhaps ²  the Lord will show pity and the child will live.

He stretched out over the boy three times and called out to the Lord, “O Lord, my God, please let this boy’s breath return to him.”

On the seventh day the child died. But the servants of David were afraid to inform him that the child had died, for they said, “While the child was still alive he would not listen to us ¹  when we spoke to him. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He will do himself harm!” ² 

And the streets of the city will be full of boys and girls playing. ¹ 

The child grew and was weaned. Abraham prepared ¹  a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. ² 

When the water in the skin was gone, she shoved ¹  the child under one of the shrubs.

Then Leah came forward with her children and they bowed down. Finally Joseph and Rachel came forward and bowed down.

returned to his brothers, and said, “The boy isn’t there! And I, where can I go?”

Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Yes, do so.” ¹  So the young girl ²  went and got ³  the child’s mother. ⁴ 

Then Naomi’s two sons, Mahlon and Kilion, also died. ¹  So the woman was left all alone – bereaved of her two children ²  as well as her husband!

Naomi took the child and placed him on her lap; ¹  she became his caregiver. ² 

Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, had no children to the day of her death.
