Consequently faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached word ¹  of Christ. ² 

“Indeed, you have said in my hearing ¹  (I heard the sound of the words!):

As for their wheels, they were called “the wheelwork” ¹  as I listened.

If the whole body were an eye, what part would do the hearing? If the whole were an ear, what part would exercise the sense of smell?

The ear that hears and the eye that sees ¹  – the Lord has made them both. ² 

But listen to what I say to you and to all these people. ¹ 

When he heard a crowd going by, he asked what was going on.

I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye has seen you. ¹ 

Then ¹  he began to tell them, “Today ²  this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read.” ³ 

After Jesus ¹  had finished teaching all this to the people, ²  he entered Capernaum. ³ 

On this topic we have much to say ¹  and it is difficult to explain, since you have become sluggish ²  in hearing.

All this ¹  monotony ²  is tiresome; no one can bear ³  to describe it: ⁴  The eye is never satisfied with seeing, nor is the ear ever content ⁵  with hearing.

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus,

The one who turns away his ear ¹  from hearing the law, even his prayer ²  is an abomination. ³ 

“Our law doesn’t condemn ¹  a man unless it first hears from him and learns ²  what he is doing, does it?” ³ 

(Now the men ¹  who were traveling with him stood there speechless, ²  because they heard the voice but saw no one.) ³ 

While I listened, he said to the others, ¹  “Go through the city after him and strike people down; do no let your eye pity nor spare ²  anyone!

For this reason I speak to them in parables: Although they see they do not see, and although they hear they do not hear nor do they understand.

Zephaniah the priest read that letter to the prophet Jeremiah. ¹
