They replied, ¹  “If this man ²  were not a criminal, ³  we would not have handed him over to you.” ⁴ 

For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines ¹  of Artemis, ²  brought a great deal ³  of business ⁴  to the craftsmen.

All have turned away, together they have become worthless; there is no one who shows kindness, not even one.” ¹ 

If you know that he is righteous, you also know ¹  that everyone who practices righteousness has been fathered ²  by him.

Everyone who practices sin ¹  also practices lawlessness; ²  indeed, ³  sin is lawlessness.

Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness ¹  is righteous, just as Jesus ²  is righteous.

“Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and puts them into practice ¹  – I will show you what he is like:

But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God. ¹ 

Jesus answered them, “I tell you the solemn truth, ¹  everyone who practices ²  sin is a slave ³  of sin.

He ¹  was a devout, God-fearing man, ²  as was all his household; he did many acts of charity for the people ³  and prayed to God regularly.

And do you think, ¹  whoever you are, when you judge ²  those who practice such things and yet do them yourself, ³  that you will escape God’s judgment?

Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach. ¹  Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.

Before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, I solemnly charge you to carry out these commands without prejudice or favoritism of any kind. ¹ 

And he says ¹  of the angels, “He makes ²  his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire,” ³ 

And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains ¹  forever.

Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers ¹  and the sexually immoral, and the murderers, and the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood! ² 

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ ¹  will enter into the kingdom of heaven – only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

For this reason the Jewish leaders ¹  were trying even harder to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was also calling God his own Father, thus making himself equal with God.

From this point on, Pilate tried ¹  to release him. But the Jewish leaders ²  shouted out, ³  “If you release this man, ⁴  you are no friend of Caesar! ⁵  Everyone who claims to be a king ⁶  opposes Caesar!”
