I tell you the truth, ¹  this generation will be held responsible for all these things! ² 

This is the first and greatest ¹  commandment.

But the person who endures to the end will be saved. ¹ 

The Word ¹  was with God in the beginning.

These had gone on ahead ¹  and were waiting for us in Troas. ² 

For by it the people of old ¹  received God’s commendation. ² 

Have you not read this scripture: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. ¹ 

These are the ones who have not defiled themselves ¹  with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These were redeemed from humanity as firstfruits to God and to the Lamb,

Sighing deeply in his spirit he said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? I tell you the truth, ¹  no sign will be given to this generation.”

He ¹  answered them, “Do you think these Galileans were worse sinners ²  than all the other Galileans, because they suffered these things?

But some of them said, “This is the man who caused the blind man to see! ¹  Couldn’t he have done something to keep Lazarus ²  from dying?”

So for this reason I have asked to see you and speak with you, for I am bound with this chain because of the hope of Israel.” ¹ 

And this is the testimony: God ¹  has given us eternal life, ²  and this life is in his Son.

Then ¹  some of the experts in the law ²  said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming!” ³ 

And the news of this spread throughout that region. ¹ 

Now when ¹  Jesus finished these parables, he moved on from there.

Jesus ¹  said to them, “Whose image ²  is this, and whose inscription?”

All the law and the prophets depend ¹  on these two commandments.”

And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

When ¹  the disciples saw this, they became indignant and said, “Why this waste?
