then the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not foresee,

When you performed awesome deeds that took us by surprise, ¹  you came down, and the mountains trembled ²  before you.

For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord,

then the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not foresee, and will cut him in two, ¹  and assign him a place with the unfaithful. ² 

Then the Lord said to me, ¹  “When you tell them all this, they will not listen to you. When you call out to them, they will not respond to you.

Be strong and confident, ¹  all you who wait on the Lord!

They see delusion and their omens are a lie. ¹  They say, “the Lord declares,” though the Lord has not sent them; ²  yet they expect their word to be confirmed. ³ 

Rely ¹  on the Lord! Be strong and confident! ²  Rely on the Lord!

Excessive ¹  speech ²  is not becoming for a fool; ³  how much less are lies ⁴  for a ruler! ⁵ 

And if you lend to those from whom you hope to be repaid, ¹  what credit is that to you? Even sinners ²  lend to sinners, so that they may be repaid in full. ³ 

For if I do this voluntarily, I have a reward. But if I do it unwillingly, I am entrusted with a responsibility.

The caravans of Tema ¹  looked intently ²  for these streams; ³  the traveling merchants ⁴  of Sheba hoped for them.

Who can make ¹  a clean thing come from an unclean? ²  No one!

May integrity and godliness protect me, for I rely on you!

You demand that your precepts be carefully kept. ¹ 

He will be beaten and despised, ¹  and his reproach will not be wiped away; ² 

Do not eat the food of a stingy person, ¹  do not crave his delicacies;

“Are you the one who is to come, ¹  or should we look for another?”
