¹ “If a man seduces a virgin ²  who is not engaged ³  and has sexual relations with her, he must surely endow ⁴  her to be his wife.

If a virgin is engaged to a man and another man meets ¹  her in the city and has sexual relations with ²  her,

to a virgin engaged ¹  to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of David, ²  and the virgin’s name was Mary.

Suppose a man comes across a virgin who is not engaged and overpowers and rapes ¹  her and they are discovered.

for the man ¹  met her in the field and the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her.

He went ¹  to be registered with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him, ²  and who was expecting a child.

Or who among you ¹  has become engaged to a woman but has not married her? He may go home, lest he die in battle and someone else marry her.”

But if the man came across ¹  the engaged woman in the field and overpowered her and raped ²  her, then only the rapist ³  must die.

You will be engaged to a woman and another man will rape ¹  her. You will build a house but not live in it. You will plant a vineyard but not even begin to use it.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, ¹  she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

“Oholah engaged in prostitution while she was mine. ¹  She lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians ²  – warriors ³ 

“While doing this very thing, ¹  as I was going ²  to Damascus with authority and complete power ³  from the chief priests,

since you are encountering ¹  the same conflict that you saw me face and now hear that I am facing. ² 

You engaged in prostitution with the Egyptians, your sexually aroused neighbors, ¹  multiplying your promiscuity and provoking me to anger.

You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians because your sexual desires were insatiable; you prostituted yourself with them and yet you were still not satisfied.

They engaged in prostitution in Egypt; in their youth they engaged in prostitution. Their breasts were squeezed there; lovers ¹  fondled their virgin nipples there.

“But look, the hand of the one who betrays ¹  me is with me on the table. ² 

Jephthah said to them, “My people and I were entangled in controversy with the Ammonites. ¹  I asked for your help, but you did not deliver me from their power. ² 

They worked hard and made the repairs. ¹  They followed the measurements specified for God’s temple and restored it. ² 

You also took your beautiful jewelry, made of my gold and my silver I had given to you, and made for yourself male images and engaged in prostitution ¹  with them.
