let their eyes be darkened so that they may not see, and make their backs bend continually.” ¹ 

The sun and moon are darkened; the stars withhold ¹  their brightness.

“But in those days, after that suffering, ¹  the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light;

May their eyes be blinded! ¹  Make them shake violently! ² 

They are darkened in their understanding, ¹  being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts.

Let its morning stars ¹  be darkened; let it wait ²  for daylight but find none, ³  nor let it see the first rays ⁴  of dawn,
