For what hope does the godless have when he is cut off, ¹  when God takes away his life? ² 

Like cutting off the feet or drinking violence, ¹  so is sending ²  a message by the hand of a fool. ³ 

He has cut out channels ¹  through the rocks; his eyes have spotted ²  every precious thing.

For he shattered the bronze gates, and hacked through the iron bars. ¹ 

He cuts down cedars and acquires a cypress ¹  or an oak. He gets ²  trees from the forest; he plants a cedar ³  and the rain makes it grow.

He takes away ¹  every branch that does not bear ²  fruit in me. He ³  prunes ⁴  every branch that bears ⁵  fruit so that it will bear more fruit.

Your tongue carries out your destructive plans; ¹  it is as effective as a sharp razor, O deceiver. ² 

My dwelling place ¹  is removed and taken away ²  from me like a shepherd’s tent. I rolled up my life like a weaver rolls cloth; ³  from the loom he cuts me off. ⁴  You turn day into night and end my life. ⁵ 

When the Lord your God eliminates the nations from the place where you are headed and you dispossess them, you will settle down in their land. ¹ 

You must not slash your body for a dead person ¹  or incise a tattoo on yourself. ²  I am the Lord.

Priests ¹  must not have a bald spot shaved on their head, they must not shave the corner of their beard, and they must not cut slashes in their body. ² 

He says, “I will build myself a large palace with spacious upper rooms.” He cuts windows in its walls, panels it ¹  with cedar, and paints its rooms red. ² 

He humbles princes; ¹  the kings of the earth regard him as awesome. ² 

Also take these ten portions of cheese to their commanding officer. ¹  Find out how your brothers are doing ²  and bring back their pledge that they received the goods. ³ 

He brings an end to wars throughout the earth; ¹  he shatters ²  the bow and breaks ³  the spear; he burns ⁴  the shields with fire. ⁵ 

For the religion ¹  of these people is worthless. They cut down a tree in the forest, and a craftsman makes it into an idol with his tools. ² 

For all of them will shave their heads in mourning. They will all cut off their beards to show their sorrow. They will all make gashes in their hands. They will all put on sackcloth. ¹ 

add the pieces of meat to it, every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder; fill it with choice bones.

Who carves out a channel for the heavy rains, and a path for the rumble of thunder,

My wounds ¹  are infected and starting to smell, ²  because of my foolish sins. ³
