Whoever finds his life ¹  will lose it, ²  and whoever loses his life because of me ³  will find it.

But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, ¹  “Lord, save me!”

And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, ¹  he will rejoice more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.

Then the high priest tore his clothes and declared, ¹  “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Now ²  you have heard the blasphemy!

When his family ¹  heard this they went out to restrain him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”

Then ¹  he looked up ²  at his disciples and said: “Blessed ³  are you who are poor, ⁴  for the kingdom of God belongs ⁵  to you.

As Paul ¹  was saying these things in his defense, Festus ²  exclaimed loudly, “You have lost your mind, ³  Paul! Your great learning is driving you insane!”

When the ship was caught in it ¹  and could not head into ²  the wind, we gave way to it and were driven ³  along.

When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and a violent ¹  storm continued to batter us, ²  we finally abandoned all hope of being saved. ³ 

The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you,” nor in turn can the head say to the foot, “I do not need you.”

They are darkened in their understanding, ¹  being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts.

But we are not among those who shrink back and thus perish, but are among those who have faith and preserve their souls. ¹ 

wild sea waves, ¹  spewing out the foam of ²  their shame; ³  wayward stars ⁴  for whom the utter depths of eternal darkness ⁵  have been reserved.
