Now when the centurion, ¹  who stood in front of him, saw how he died, ²  he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!”

for each tree is known ¹  by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered ²  from thorns, nor are grapes picked ³  from brambles. ⁴ 

Then ¹  he said to them, “Suppose one of you ²  has a friend, and you go to him ³  at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, ⁴ 

For this reason also the wisdom ¹  of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’

For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t sit down ¹  first and compute the cost ²  to see if he has enough money to complete it?

In the same way therefore not one of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his own possessions. ¹ 

“Would any one of you say ¹  to your slave ²  who comes in from the field after plowing or shepherding sheep, ‘Come at once and sit down for a meal’? ³ 

So ¹  they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’

But if we say, ‘From people,’ all the people will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.”

So ¹  they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.

Then ¹  one of them ²  struck the high priest’s slave, ³  cutting off his right ear.

Then ¹  a little later someone else ²  saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Man, ³  I am not!”

So ¹  when they came to the place that is called “The Skull,” ²  they crucified ³  him there, along with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

Now ¹  that very day two of them ²  were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles ³  from Jerusalem. ⁴ 

Then ¹  John testified, ²  “I saw the Spirit descending like a dove ³  from heaven, ⁴  and it remained on him. ⁵ 

Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washing, ¹  each holding twenty or thirty gallons. ² 

Then the Jewish leaders ¹  said to him, “This temple has been under construction ²  for forty-six years, ³  and are you going to raise it up in three days?”

This ¹  is the bread that has come down from heaven, so that a person ²  may eat from it and not die.

Jesus replied, ¹  “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is the devil?” ² 

Hasn’t Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps ¹  the law! Why do you want ²  to kill me?”
