The fruit of the righteous is like ¹  a tree producing life, ²  and the one who wins souls ³  is wise. ⁴ 

Every wise woman ¹  builds ²  her household, ³  but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands.

The path of life is upward ¹  for the wise person, ²  to ³  keep him from going downward to Sheol. ⁴ 

as are those of Hamath also, which adjoins Damascus, and Tyre ¹  and Sidon, ²  though they consider themselves to be very wise.

The ¹  foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’

Plans ¹  are established by counsel, so ²  make war ³  with guidance.

Surely ¹  one sees ²  that even wise people die; ³  fools and spiritually insensitive people all pass away ⁴  and leave their wealth to others. ⁵

He changes times and seasons, deposing some kings and establishing others. ¹  He gives wisdom to the wise; he imparts knowledge to those with understanding; ² 

So all the king’s wise men came in, but they were unable to read the writing or to make known its ¹  interpretation to the king.

“Everyone ¹  who hears these words of mine and does them is like ²  a wise man ³  who built his house on rock.

Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law? ¹  Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish?

Think about the circumstances of your call, ¹  brothers and sisters. ²  Not many were wise by human standards, ³  not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position. ⁴ 

But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong.

For the wisdom of this age is foolishness with God. As it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness.” ¹ 

Who knows if he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet ¹  he will be master over all the fruit of ²  my labor ³  for which I worked so wisely ⁴  on earth! ⁵  This also is futile!

The officials of Zoan are nothing but fools; ¹  Pharaoh’s wise advisers give stupid advice. How dare you say to Pharaoh, “I am one of the sages, one well-versed in the writings of the ancient kings?” ² 

The words he speaks are sinful and deceitful; he does not care about doing what is wise and right. ¹
