You will perish among the nations; the land of your enemies will consume you.

You will bear sons and daughters but not keep them, because they will be taken into captivity.

“He has put my relatives ¹  far from me; my acquaintances only ²  turn away from me.

My guests ¹  and my servant girls consider ²  me a stranger; I am a foreigner ³  in their eyes.

I was a father ¹  to the needy, and I investigated the case of the person I did not know;

Can you count on ¹  it to bring in ²  your grain, ³  and gather the grain ⁴  to your threshing floor? ⁵ 

The wicked turn aside from birth; ¹  liars go astray as soon as they are born. ² 

My own brothers treat me like a stranger; they act as if I were a foreigner. ¹ 

I am like a foreigner in this land. ¹  Do not hide your commands from me!

How miserable I am! ¹  For I have lived temporarily ²  in Meshech; I have resided among the tents of Kedar. ³ 

lest strangers devour ¹  your strength, ²  and your labor ³  benefit ⁴  another man’s house.

The one who puts up security for a stranger ¹  will surely have trouble, ²  but whoever avoids ³  shaking hands ⁴  will be secure.

The way of the guilty person ¹  is devious, ²  but as for the pure, ³  his way is upright.

Let another ¹  praise you, and not your own mouth; ²  someone else, ³  and not your own lips.

¹ “Foreigners will take care of ²  your sheep; foreigners will work in your fields and vineyards.

You will die the death of the uncircumcised ¹  by the hand of foreigners; for I have spoken, declares the sovereign Lord.’”

And we rightly so, for we are getting what we deserve for what we did, but this man has done nothing ¹  wrong.”

Jesus answered, ¹  “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you don’t understand these things? ² 

Great ¹  fear gripped ²  the whole church ³  and all who heard about these things.

The one who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, ¹  but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
