“‘But you trusted in your beauty and capitalized on your fame by becoming a prostitute. You offered your sexual favors to every man who passed by so that your beauty ¹  became his.

For her blood was in it; she poured it on an exposed rock; she did not pour it on the ground to cover it up with dust.

They took it all from the middle of the tent, brought it to Joshua and all the Israelites, and placed ¹  it before the Lord.

They shed innocent blood – the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan. The land was polluted by bloodshed. ¹ 

Like one who takes off a garment on a cold day, ¹  or like vinegar poured on soda, ²  so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart. ³ 

(Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil ¹  and wiped his feet dry with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) ² 

And the rain fell ¹  on the earth forty days and forty nights.

The depths have covered them, ¹  they went down to the bottom ²  like a stone.

Iron is taken from the ground, ¹  and rock is poured out ²  as copper.

On what ¹  were its bases ²  set, or who laid its cornerstone –

when the dust hardens ¹  into a mass, and the clumps of earth stick together?

I weep and refrain from eating food, ¹  which causes others to insult me. ² 

I have discovered David, my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him as king. ¹ 

He caused all their conquerors ¹  to have pity on them.

For he has satisfied those who thirst, ¹  and those who hunger he has filled with food. ² 

How can I repay the Lord for all his acts of kindness to me?

I pour out my lament before him; I tell him about ¹  my troubles.

By his knowledge the primordial sea ¹  was broken open, ²  and the clouds drip down dew. ³ 

He has besieged ¹  and surrounded ²  me with bitter hardship. ³
